Our Latest Gemological ArticleHow To Start Loose Gemstone Collecting
By Lee MacRae
Why collect
loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And just like
natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and show case the wide variety of gemstones available today. This article will examine the
loose gemstones hobby.
First off you'll need the knowledge on the various gemstones available. You'll find it very helpful to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.
Of paramount importance is the color of the gem. Top grade gemstones have colors that are close to the purest spectral colors of yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange or red. Muted gemstone colors or are too dark can lower the value quite easily.
The cut of the stone is extremely important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones as well. A good cut highlights the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way of determining the excellence in gemstone cut is to consider how consistently it reflects the light throughout the surface of the stone. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away instead of reflecting internally. Gemstone color will be washed out.
Next to look at is the aspect of clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone being considered. Larger flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with others needing to be magnified 10X
Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.
Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Take each gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone. And in Canada you can find nephrite jade in Dease Lake, British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Lac St-Jean, Quebec along with black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

More Info On natural diamond
The amount and quality of light reflecting from the surface of a gemstone is known as its lustre. For example, vitreous is a "glass-like lustre" and adamantine is the 'very high lustre' seen on the surface of a polished diamond. The lustre of gemstones are also described in terms that are easy to relate to, i.e. metallic, resinous, pearly, silky, greasy, waxy and dull. It is usually found (with exceptions) that the harder the gemstone material the brighter the lustre. The quality of the surface polish is important, as a poor polish will display a poor lustre.
