Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in collecting loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to travel to various neghbourhood locations to look for rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you then follow along as we show you the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

The first step in beginning this hobby the intelligent way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By visiting a local library you can find everything you need to know that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. These materials are so related to their color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They are valued much less the farther they are from the pure spectral color.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds but along with your gemstones. A precision cut gemstone showcases the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One excellent way to determine the excellence of gemstone cut is to consider how well it reflects light on a consistent basis throughout its surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside. Gem color appears washed out.

Next to look at is the issue of gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone being considered. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size aspect since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but have different carat weights that result in different prices as well. This is due to the difference of specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Pennsylvania you can find Amethyst, Almandite Garnet and Pyrope Garnet, Beryl, Sunstone and Moonstone. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Torrington, New South Wales, Australia or hunt specimens the quartz regions in Wave Hill in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Topaz is full of mystery, in fact there is a famous movie mystery thriller named
after it. The Topaz is well-known as a large quality gem. The worlds. largest
topaz crystal was found in Brazil at the Minas Gerais, the world.s most well-
known producer of topaz. It was purchased in 1938 by Allan Caplan, a New York
dealer in minerals and precious gems. Upon his first inspection of the stone he
thought there might be something wrong with it, and this particular stone along
with two others were sent the American Museum for further study. What the
experts found was the largest topaz known to that date. It is still housed at
the museum.

There are a lot of different trade names for opals, but the most recognized and
widely used is the precious and common opal. Even though the opal is brittle and
can break quite easily, and is prey to scratches and heat it remains high on the
list of gemstone collectors. The reason is that opals are truly beautiful. Its.
beauty fascinated earlier cultures. Some even believed it fell from heaven. The
birthstone of October is the opal and in the 19th century those who were
superstitious believed that only those born in that month should wear opals.
Anyone else wearing one was supposed to have run the risk of having bad luck or
running into a dire fate.

Microcrystalline opals are made up of a microcrystalline material which is a
crystallized substance or rock which contains small crystals that are visible
only through microscopic examination. These opals are broken into two categories
: Opal-CT is where a predominant mineral rich layer is present within the opal
layers. They are all genuine minerals that formed from evaporating water with
low amounts of soluble silica. They are not Opal-A because the A type of opals
thrived during dry spells with very little water input.
